A shooting near Altavista left one hospitalized and two facing charges Saturday night.
Investigator Tracy Emerson, with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, said about 7:45 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a call about the incident near the now-vacant Boley’s Store on Dearing Ford Road, just north of Altavista.
Emerson said he arrived at the scene within about 5 minutes, and Altavista fire and rescue crews arrived shortly thereafter.
The victim, whose name Emerson did not release, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, and had suffered heavy blood loss, Emerson said.
The victim was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital, and remained in surgery more than three hours after it began, said Emerson.
Emerson said one of the gunshots may have hit the victim’s femoral artery.
At about 10:15 p.m., Emerson said deputies arrested Matthew Eugene Young, 20, of Lynchburg in connection with the incident, charging him with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
More charges could be pending, depending on the outcome of the victim’s surgery, Emerson said.
He said deputies also arrested a suspect who was with Young at the time, but charges against that suspect are still pending.
Emerson said he was able to make contact with Young’s parents, to coordinate Young’s turning himself in at the Colonial Motel, near the intersection of Wards Road and Virginia 24 near Yellow Branch.
Emerson said three firearms were retrieved from Young’s vehicle, two of them handguns, one an “assault-type rifle.”
