- Brookville High School senior Joey Ricketts was recently named the winner of the Campbell County Library System essay contest. Colton Owen , also of BHS, took second place, and Amanda Johnson of Altavista High School took third.

- The E.C. Glass High School Marching Band won the following categories in the Group IV-Open Class at the U.S. Scholastic Band Association Regional Championship held recently in Bassett: best music, best visual, best marching, best percussion, best guard and best band: The band also received the highest overall score of the day out of 13 schools competing. The E.C. Glass band later went on to win the Group IV-Open Class at the U.S. Scholastic Band Association Virginia State Marching Band Competition held at Salem City Stadium.
- The 2008 E.C. Glass High School Crest Yearbook won a first-place rating in the Virginia High School League competition.
- The following members of the E.C. Glass High School football team participated in E. C. Glass Reads, a community outreach program co-sponsored by the Lynchburg Public Library: Cameron Barksdale, Corey Bradley, Dexter Bowling, Buck Burton, Tom Casey, Terry Coker, Jack Collins, Matt Elliott, Derek Gale, Demetrius Garland, La Shawn Gordon, Chris Harper, Saul Hicks, Trevor Hicks, Cornelius Jones, Lakeem Kennedy, Trey Kennedy, Kevin Lang, Spencer Latham, John Leamon, Chris Lyle, Desmond Mack, Sean McLaughlin, Denzel Patterson, Jake Prest, Matthew Smith, Matt Taylor, Dimitri Tweedy, Joe Wertz and Cody Winfield. w The Heritage High School Pioneer Rifles Military Drill team won the American Legion Western Region Drill Team Championship held recently at Heritage High School. This is Heritage’s ninth consecutive regional championship. Heritage will represent the region in the State Championship to be held in March.
- The Heritage High School Pioneer Rifles Marksmanship Team took second place in the Big Orange Classic Marksmanship Competition held recently at Heritage High School. Heritage student Julio Giron was named the high overall marksman and Nick Chilton, also from HHS, was the high overall first-year marksman.
- The following Sandusky Middle School students in the Citizens Service class volunteered to feed the homeless Oct. 25 at the Lynchburg Area Salvation Army: Cheyenne Nickerson, Grae Tweedy, Kelsey Comerford, Myliek Booker, Harley Taylor, Tyonna Bennett, Peyton Knight and Meghan Warner. The class was accompanied by teacher Mike Bremer, Principal Jay Sales and his daughter, Chelsee, and other relatives of students. The students provided food for 51 people. Student Cheyenne Nickerson initiated the idea for the project.
- The E.C. Glass High School Drama Department won the 2008 Virginia Theatre Association State Secondary School Theatre Championship during the annual VTA conference held recently in Reston. Glass was also named state runner up in the VTA Secondary School Technical Theatre competition. Individual Tech Theatre honors went to Ben Soldate, first place in scenery design, and Caroline Springer, first place in costume design.
- The following Linkhorne Middle School teams placed in the Tech Challenge during the Future Focus Expo held Oct. 21 at Liberty University: Abby Roberts, Gillian Gunn, Hunter Holden, Averie Good, Gabby Braxton and Phillip Henley, second place, and Mariah Vaughn, Mikayla Marraccini, Lauren Poletti, Emma Dahlin, Nan Craddock and Virginia McCarthy, third, Centra Healthcare Challenge; Paul Mortemousque, Bailey Jennings, Mitch O’Brien and Blake Proffitt, second, and Tierra Slaughter, Guillame Galbron, Jayquan Franklin and Will Seng, third, Wiley & Wilson , CVCC/UVA Engineering Partnership Challenge; and Joe Melton, Mitchell Swann, John Osinga and Walker Paxton, third, Babcock & Wilcox Company Energy Challenge.
- The following Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation teams placed in the Tech Challenge during the Future Focus Expo held Oct. 21 at Liberty University: Victoria Varah, Luis Pumagualle, Ashlyn Goolsby, Amanda Calvery and Meagan Kenny, second place, Babcock & Wilcox Company Energy Challenge; and Cassie Smith, Celeste Schroder, Audrey Ferguson, Charissa Gray and Katie Hames, third, CTA Communications Challenge.
- E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools each received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program and Candler Oil Co., Inc.
Private Schools
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School students Nina Rezai and William Loftus took first place in the Public Forum event during the South-Western Virginia Forensics Tournament held Oct. 21.
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School students Mikayla Burton, Molly Graham and Tom Bruzek were winners of the summer art contest.
