The revitalization of downtown Lynchburg caught the attention of Southern Living, and is featured in a regional section of the magazine’s December issue.
The page-and-a-half article focuses on Lynch’s Landing, a nonprofit organization that promotes downtown revitalization efforts and events.
Joe Rada, associate livings editor, said in an e-mail that the article is “our supportive nod to the whole idea of bringing new life to downtown Lynchburg.”
A writer and photographer from the magazine were in Lynchburg several years ago working on a travel article. They picked up a brochure and business card from Lynch’s Landing, which was still new at the time.
“We kept tabs on the Lynch’s Landing endeavors for a while, until we felt the time was right to applaud the program,” Rada said.
A photographer came about one year ago, soon after Angela Hamilton was named Lynch’s Landing’s new director.
Rada’s article on Lynchburg talks about some of the hands-on work of Lynch’s Landing: writing grants, putting up trash cans and decorating downtown.
Rada said he has written about hundreds of revitalization efforts in his 20 years with Southern Living. Each one is different, making comparisons hard.
“I’d say Lynchburg has a lot to be proud of,” Rada said. “It’s taken what it has, made it better, and is moving in a direction that can only mean there’s more good news to come.
Hamilton said that the article is “a wonderful acknowledgement of the public-private partnerships that make downtown lively and vibrant.”
The article appears in the magazine’s “Mid-Atlantic Living: People and Places” section, which goes in copies of Southern Living in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
The December issue started showing up in subscribers’ mailboxes this month and will be on newsstands around Nov. 25.
