Appomattox
-The following Appomattox Elementary School students received Reader Awards for the week of Sept. 15-19: Justin Carter, Daniel Batzal, Sierra Robertson, Andrew Sams, Destine Berkley, Samantha Hunter, Frank Kennon, Alan Prioletti and Garrett Woody.
Bedford
-The following Jefferson Forest High School students were recently named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program: Caroline Ballard, Catherine Boniface, Emily Boniface and Sarah Clark. These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
-Karen Nuzzo, art teacher for Big Island and Otter River elementary schools, was recently awarded a $475 grant from Donors Choose.org. The money will be used to purchase artist sketch pads and charcoal drawing pencil sets.
Lynchburg
-The following Heritage High School students were recently named 2008-2009 National Honor Society officers: Lemondre, Watson, president, Jake Haskins, vice president, Cyrus Hinkson, secretary, James Gaston, treasurer, and Sarah Lavinder, reporter.
