The town of Appomattox will examine a tourism-sharing proposal with Lynchburg, but likely won’t make a final decision until next month.
Town Council unanimously voted Monday, after a lengthy discussion, to pursue a working relationship and contract with Lynchburg for a minimum six-month term, town clerk Roxanne Paulette said.
The proposal, first presented last month by Lynchburg Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau tourism director Beckie Nix, includes sharing a director to save costs and pooling advertising money to make it stretch further.
The idea was formulated in part by Rex Hammond, president of the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, which manages Lynchburg’s tourism program.
Council will ask the chamber to draft and present a contract for examination, Paulette said.
Nix served for two years as the town of Appomattox tourism director and left the position in August.
Town Council is now reviewing that position’s job description, and during the transition period Appomattox County has agreed to let county recreation and tourism director Anne Dixon assist the town program, Paulette said.

w After several discussions in closed session, Town Council voted to create a list of engineering firms with which it prefers to work.
The town has had an informal working relationship with Hurt & Proffitt for about 12 years, but council is concerned that there isn’t a formal contract, Paulette said. “A contract environment is what the Town Council is after ultimately, not this letter of understanding environment that we’ve been in for 12 years.”
Firms will be selected based on several qualifications that have yet to be set. The majority of engineering jobs in the town center around water and sewer infrastructure, Paulette said.
Hurt & Proffitt could be on the list if it submits a proposal and is selected, Paulette said. “The town will continue to work with its current letter of understanding with Hurt & Proffitt until the firms are pre-qualified.”
