SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

Amherst County

-Sept. 25: Amherst County School Counseling Department information session for college-bound juniors and seniors and their parents, 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Topics include the college application process, ACT/SAT registration and testing strategies and financial aid/scholarships.

Amelon Elementary School
-Sept. 25: FAST Program begins

Elon Elementary School

Sandusky Middle School
-Sept. 23: Back to School Night, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Parents and students should report to the cafeteria at 6 p.m.

Heritage High School
-Sept. 26: School Picture Day for all underclassmen; make-up pictures for seniors. All photos will be taken in the auditorium.
-The Heritage High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC is currently selling the following items in its fundraiser: HHS car flag ($10), HHS refrigerator magnet ($2), and hot and cold drink mugs ($10).

Private Schools

Appomattox Christian Academy
-Sept. 26 Fourth Annual Golf Tournament at Mountain View Golf Course in Appomattox, noon registration and lunch followed by shotgun start of the captain’s choice tournament at 1 p.m. Registration is $60 per golfer, $240 per foursome. Students with tournament duties will have transportation to the golf course. Parents, volunteers, and sponsors coordinate with Deb Thomas, (434) 352-3320.
-Sept. 29: Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. Event includes special chapel service and announcement about Bible memory competition. Hot Lunch Menu released for Oct. 5-29.

Bedford Christian Academy

-Sept. 26: LCA fifth-graders take tethered hot air balloon rides beginning at 8 a.m.
-The second annual Alumni Homecoming BBQ will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m Friday, Oct. 17 at Williams Stadium. The event costs $5 per family and includes admission to the homecoming football game. LCA alumni who have served in the military will be recognized on the field prior to the game. For more information or to RSVP, call the Office of Academy Relations at 592-4935.

New Covenant Schools

Virginia Episcopal School
-Sept. 26: Founder’s Day celebration,
11 a.m., outside Jett Hall. Ceremony will include honoring three outstanding alumni. John Flippin will receive the Outstanding Service Award, and Anne Mauldin and Lloyd Horton will be honored as well.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Appomattox

-The following Appomattox Middle School students attended the Grow One Summer Camp held at Lynchburg College: Devon Burrell, Nicole Cabell, Elizabeth Davis, Willis Hamlett, Casey Martin, Chase Simpson, Shelby Voorhees and Zachary Williams. Camp topics included economic principles, entrepreneurship concepts and important life and citizenship skills.

Bedford

Lynchburg

-Heritage High School student Candler Paige has been elected lieutenant governor of the Capital District of the Key Club for the 2008-2009 school year. Paige served as the HHS Key Club president for the 2007-2008 school year. As a board member, she will attend district and national Key Club conferences and meetings.
-The following Heritage High School students were elected Student Council Association officers for the 2008-2009 school year: Marquita Ferguson, president, Ryan Davis, vice president, and Kyle Tenny, school board representative.
-Heritage High School senior Benjamin Karaus was recently named a 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist.

Private Schools

-One hundred percent of the students in grades pre-K through fifth participated in Holy Cross Regional Catholic School’s Campaign 130 fundraising event. Each class met or exceeded its fundraising goal.
