Lynchburg School Board is scheduled to discuss an early retirement incentive plan tonight.
If approved, the plan could reduce the number of layoffs the division faces and save money by persuading longtime educators to retire.
According to the proposal, those eligible under the Virginia Retirement System would work 20 to 24 days for 20 percent of their final salary. The proposed policy has been reviewed by an attorney and was modeled on similar policies from other school divisions.
The board previously discussed creating a retirement incentive plan at its last meeting.
Also on the agenda is the proposed restructuring of the division’s alternative education program. City education officials have long discussed finding a new location for alternative education in order to better accommodate students.
With stimulus funds, division officials have talked about renovating the Fort Hill School to use for middle school alternative education. Officials have said renovating Fort Hill could substantially reduce costs.
Board members also are expected to make a minor revision to their 2009-2010 budget. In its proposed budget, the board recommended eliminating two library assistants. According to agenda materials, after reviewing the state Standards of Quality, which outline educational requirements, officials realized the positions are required.
