An Appomattox man accused in the Thanksgiving Day slaying of his daughter’s boyfriend was indicted this week by a county grand jury.
Ardie Jackson, 46, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in 19-year-old Michael King’s death.
At Jackson’s preliminary hearing in March, Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Donnie Simpson testified Jackson told him he believed he had unloaded King’s shotgun before picking it up, shouldering it, pointing it at the teenager and pulling the trigger.
Simpson testified King’s last words were, “It’s loaded,” before being shot.
The shooting at Jackson’s 2382 Rock Spring Road home was reported to authorities around 8 p.m. According to testimony at the earlier hearing, Jackson told investigators it was an accident.
Jackson told deputies he had come home that evening after going fishing and found King’s shotgun in his bedroom. He had racked the 12-gauge gun a few times to clear it when King walked into the room, Simpson said.
Jackson told Simpson he shouldered it and pushed the pump forward with his finger on the trigger when it went off, Simpson testified.
At that hearing, Jackson’s lawyer, Mark Arthur contended his client’s actions were a tragic accident since he had believed the gun was unloaded. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Brooke Sterne, however, said Jackson told investigators he was familiar with guns and that he should have known better than to point the gun at someone with his finger on the trigger.
During the grand jury meeting, prosecutors added a new charge against Jackson of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Prosecutors in the Appomattox County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office were not available Thursday to say when Jackson had been convicted, or of what.
