Dozens of dogs were taken from a commercial breeder in the Spout Spring area of Appomattox County on Wednesday night, according to county and state authorities.
According to a news release issued by the county’s public information officer, Vicky Phelps, 49 dogs were taken from a kennel at 1669 Double Bridges Road.
Phelps said animal control officers from Campbell and Prince Edward counties had to be called in to help with the seizure.
A veterinarian with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services was also on site, spokeswoman Marion Horsley said.
“The seizure was coordinated by Appomattox County Animal Control,” Horsley said. “We were there to provide veterinary expertise.”
Phelps said the seizure was recommended by the state veterinarian because of the dogs’ living conditions and the health of dogs on the property.
Her release stated that “a number” of the dogs were taken directly to the Appomattox County Animal Hospital.
Local animal control officers could not be reached for specifics about those conditions or where the remaining animals are housed.
Horsley and Phelps stated an investigation was ongoing and could not release more information.
