The Lynchburg School Board is scheduled to discuss finalizing two policy changes and approving the restructuring of its alternative education program at a meeting tonight.
Division officials also are expected to review policies pertaining to sick and personal leave. If the change to the sick leave policy is approved, employees would have to accrue sick leave monthly instead of having it advanced annually.
According to a division memo, officials believe the change will cause staff members to use fewer sick days. The memo also states a review of sick leave shows in some circumstances employees have used all the leave advanced to them, but quit before the end of the school year and the time is not earned.
The proposed change to the personal leave policy would also make those days accrued. They would be given at the rate of one per semester, as opposed to the current situation where they are advanced annually.
Also on the agenda is the proposed restructuring of the division’s alternative education program. City education officials have long discussed finding a new location for alternative education in order to better accommodate students.
The board previously discussed using stimulus funds to renovating the Fort Hill School, which is currently owned by the city and vacant, to use for middle school alternative education.
The board is scheduled to discuss the plan again tonight. Officials have said renovating Fort Hill could substantially reduce costs and some students could have a longer instructional day.
