The Bedford County Board of Supervisors may vote tonight to authorize a public hearing for a conservation easement for a portion of Montvale Park.
The easement would provide a naturally preserved area that includes a trail system, according to a memorandum County Administrator Kathleen Guzi sent to supervisors earlier this month.
The county has been working with a conservation organization called The Nature Conservancy since 2006 to preserve parts of the park, located near U.S. 460 roughly 10 miles west of the city of Bedford. The easement is now finalized and has been reviewed by county staff and the county attorney, Guzi said in the memo.
The proposed easement restricts any future development in certain areas, but does not conflict with plans to develop recreational attractions such as fields, shelters and playgrounds.
Donald Hart, president of the Virginia Association of Counties, is also set to meet with the board today.
George Nester, the county’s director of community development who is leaving May 1 to become Halifax County administrator, is also meeting with supervisors to discuss upcoming changes to the county’s zoning ordinance.
The department is currently in the process of working to give the county its first major zoning update since 1998. Several supervisors have recently expressed the need to make sure the revised language is clear and understandable before any future decisions are made.
The meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. on the upper floor of the county administration building at 122 E. Main St. in Bedford.
