ACHIEVEMENTS

Appomattox

- The following Appomattox County High School Future Farmers of America members placed at the 2009 FFA HUB Federation Public Speaking Contest held recently at Monelison Middle School in Amherst County: William Lewis, first in the creed speaking Career Development Event, and Mary Beth Wingfield, second in the prepared public speaking contest. Lewis will advance to the Southside Area contest.

Bedford

- The Jefferson Forest High School Band was recently named a ‘Virginia Honor Band’ for the 2008-2009 school year by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. The JFHS Band gained this recognition by earning ‘Superior’ ratings at the VBODA Marching Band and District Concert festivals.

Campbell

- The following Campbell County high school students were invited to participate in the 2009 Summer Residential Governor’s Schools: Ha-Eun Cho of Brookville High School, Math, Science and Technology; Yewon Ji and Dongjae Sohn, both of Brookville, Humanities; and Trinae Jones of William Campbell High School, Visual and Performing Arts. The following students were named alternates for the program: Heidi Heimer of Altavista High School, Visual and Performing Arts; Lindsey Deaner, Laura Glickman, Medley Lovelace and Laurel Stephenson, all of Brookville, Visual and Performing Arts; Amanda Metz of Brookville, Marine Science; James Murtha of Brookville, Math, Science and Technology; Wei-hua Sung of Brookville, Life Sciences and Medicine; and LaShanta Boyd of William Campbell, Visual and Performing Arts. The following students were invited to participate in the Foreign Language Academies: Tammy Yu of Brookville, Japanese, and Lauren Jennings of William Campbell, Arabic.

- New Covenant Schools seniors Nicole Mayberry and Sam Hurt recently received the Lynchburg Rotary Club Ethics Award. They each received a $500 scholarship for their demonstration of high standards of personal ethics.

E.C. Glass High School

- E.C. Glass’s Mercy Care Council is collecting books for the used book sale to be held the week of May 18. Proceeds will support the library and reading programs at the Mercy Care Centre School in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Books can be dropped off in the Main Office at E.C. Glass.The Mercy Care Council is also planning a yard sale from 8 a.m. to noon on May 23 at E.C. Glass. Donations of clothes, books, jewelry, toys and household goods are being accepted through May 18 and can be dropped off in the ECG main office or bookstore. Contributions must be clean and in good repair.
