The town of Appomattox has a new town manager: Bart Van Nieuwenhuise.
Van Nieuwenhuise, who started Monday, worked for six years as a private consultant and has 17 years of public experience, including as assistant city manager in McAlester, Okla., and public works director in Opelika, Ala., according to a town news release. Most recently, Van Nieuwenhuise worked for a private consulting firm in Alabama.
He was born in Quantico and grew up in Virginia Beach, where he started his career as a civil engineer.
Van Nieuwenhuise replaces former town manager David Garrett, who retired at the end of February.
