Campbell County police ID man pulled from Staunton River

The body of a man pulled from Staunton River in southern Campbell County early Sunday morning has been identified.

Anthony Dobson, 46, of Stagecoach Road in Nathalie in Halifax County, was found unresponsive in the river near Long Island Park, near the Campbell-Pittsylvania County line, said Capt. L.T. Guthrie of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.

It took authorities a couple of days for a positive identification since Dobson was found without identification.

Dobson had drowned, but the medical examiner in Roanoke is still awaiting toxicology results to determine what other factors may have been involved in his death, Guthrie said. That could take a few more weeks.

No foul play is suspected.

Dobson had been reported missing to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office on July 30, Guthrie said. His family had told authorities that he was familiar with the area in which he was found, though they had not known where he was headed when he disappeared.
