Republican Gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell steps off the bus to greet workers here at Piedmont Bioproducts, where they are on the cutting edge of green energy. Piedmont will begin turning saw dust from chopped up plants into biofuel next week.

McDonnell toured the plant where the bio fuel will be made and commended them on their innovation.

“This is an exciting new high tech opportunity for the region,” said McDonnell.

Once Piedmont Bioproducts perfects their formula, they plan on opening one of these plants in each county in Southwest Virginia. McDonnell says Virginia could use more new small businesses like piedmont to pull us out of the recession.

“I think what we need is we need new industry. We need high tech industries that can help supplant the old economy with this new economy,” said McDonnell.

Monday he unveiled his economic plan for rural Virginia which focuses on creating and improving small businesses. The plan will give tax credits and make it easier for small businesses to get permits.

McDonnell says he’s committed to helping out small businesses in Southside Virginia.

“To have a deputy Secretary of Commerce and Trade, solely focused on rural Virginia reporting directly to the cabinet officer,” said McDonnell.

If elected Governor, McDonnell also pledge that he or the Lieutenant Governor would visit Southside at least once a month.

“Talking to business leaders and talking to leaders of the public sector to find out what do we need to do to bring this economy back,” said McDonnell.

Walking along the fields that will soon be turned into biofuel, McDonnell says small businesses like Piedmont Bioproducts are the key to Virginia’s future
