The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company yesterday was awarded a $5.2 million grant from the federal Transportation Department to buy seven buses, equipment and passenger amenities.
It's part of a statewide $41.3 million package of economic stimulus funds for buses, vans, equipment and other transit improvements.
Other grants awarded yesterday were:
- Richmond's Greater Richmond Transit Company received $12.5 million to buy 38 paratransit vans, 11 regular 40-foot buses, bus stop signs and vehicle surveillance cameras, and to pay for preventative maintenance work.
- the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission: $13.7 million to purchase a locomotive for the Virginia Railway Express commuter train operation, two buses, signage, shelters and equipment;
- the town of Blacksburg: $4.5 million to purchase seven buses, additional equipment, computer hardware and software, and passenger amenities;
- the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation: $3.8 million to buy 50 vans, two buses, engineering and architectural services for rural transit-system operators the state; and
- the city of Harrisonburg: $1.7 million to purchase four buses, passenger shelters, equipment and passenger amenities.
By December, the state will apply for an additional $13.2 million from the federal economic stimulus package to help Virginia's rural and small urban transit systems, said Charles M. Badger, director of the state's Rail and Public Transportation Department.
The U.S. Transportation Department has made $48.1 billion in stimulus funds available for highway, road, transit, bridge and airport projects nationwide. Of that, $23.9 billion has already been obligated for nearly 7,500 projects.
