U.S. Sen. Mark Warner visited the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford this morning to announce the arrival later today of an assessment team from the National Park Service.
The team will evaluate the financially troubled memorial's qualifications for being added to the park service's inventory, which would ensure its continued operation.
The memorial's director, William McIntosh, has said the memorial's financial woes put it at risk of closing. It has an annual operating expense of $2.2 million and pulls in less than half of that through ticket sales and proceeds from its gift shop.
Warner said he is encouraged by how fast the National Park Service has responded to legislation the Senate passed this summer encouraging it to assume management.
The assessment team will be in Bedford for two days.
