Bedford County supervisors and school officials will meet tonight to discuss the division’s proposed long-range facility plan that presents an investment of up to $55.6 million in upgrades to several city and county schools.
School board members agreed in October to submit a plan that seeks construction of a new Bedford Middle School for $29.8 million, the renovation and expansion of the current Bedford Elementary School for $4.8 million and the expansion of Forest Middle School for $14.2 million.
Another possibility board members discussed in October would convert Bedford Primary School to central office administration space, which would cost another $6.8 million. Board members directed Superintendent Douglas Schuch to further research future uses for that building.
The overall plan would affect nearly 3,000 students if it were to come to fruition, based on Schuch’s presentation.
The plan is currently a draft and has not been formally approved by board members. Supervisors had requested the plan for informational purposes in putting together county budgets — the Board of Supervisors would serve as the schools’ fiscal agent for borrowing money.
Schuch has called the plan a “working document” that he said would be reviewed annually.
Bedford County Administrator Kathleen Guzi said she expects some of Thursday’s discussion will be in closed session since the plan includes two schools owned by the city of Bedford. The city is considering a reversion to town status, which would affect the schools’ future ownership.
The 7 p.m. meeting will take place at the Bedford Area Welcome Center at 816 Burks Hill Road in Bedford.
