CHARLOTTESVILLE — A civil liberties group contends the location of a Virginia congressman’s office is limiting the free speech rights of constituents.
The Rutherford Institute has sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello requesting that he move his Charlottesville office to another location where protesters will not run afoul of private property concerns.
The Rutherford’s John W. Whitehead said Perriello has a duty to ensure his constituents have the opportunity to exercise their rights to petition and demonstrate. Whitehead said some have been prohibited from conducting peaceful protests in the parking lot of the congressman’s office.
A spokeswoman for the Virginia Democrat said Thursday that Perriello’s office is open to all, and limits on protests outside the office are at the directive of the property owner.
