Falwell Jr.: 'Letter writer misquoted me'
Bill Blackwell should be ashamed of himself. In his Dec. 14 letter to the editor, he quoted me out of context in order to support his contention that Liberty University endorses political candidates.
Mr. Blackwell cited my quote from the Liberty Journal that I was elated on the evening of Nov. 3 when I learned that Liberty students were the deciding factor in the House of Delegates race between Republican Scott Garrett and incumbent Del. Shannon Valentine. He conveniently omitted my quote, also published in the Journal, that it was not because of who won and who lost, but rather due to the fact that LU students were the deciding factor in their first local election after being disenfranchised for decades.
Liberty University will continue to encourage its students, faculty and staff to vote, but will never endorse a candidate.

Holiday cheer
For 19 years, Nationwide Insurance Company has sponsored Santa Calls for the participants in the nutrition program of Senior Services (Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging, Inc.).
On Dec. 5, a beautiful snowy morning, “Hello, Merry Christmas” rang out over the wires from Maine to Florida and New Jersey to Hawaii as the participants called family and friends for free long distance telephone calls.
Approximately 20 Nationwide employees gave up the Saturday day-off to come in and assist our seniors, one on one, to get their calls through.
After completing their calls, they were escorted to the cafeteria, where they each were greeted by Santa Claus and given gift cards to Walmart. The Nationwide employees hosted a very special Christmas party with lots of goodies to eat and drink for more than 100 seniors.
Each senior had a chance to win a door prize throughout the morning. Everyone enjoyed a game of Santa bingo, and the Nationwide employees led the singing of Christmas carols. Members of the Timberlake Christian Church Bell Choir volunteered their time and musical talents for a third year with beautiful bell songs for the Christmas season.
We at Senior Services (Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging, Inc.) would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Nationwide Insurance and all their employees who made this a very special time for our seniors. Their smiling faces and their expressions of gratitude warmed our hearts as we realized how the gift of a telephone call, the caring and sharing by the employees of Nationwide, truly helped to make their Christmas a littler merrier.
