ACHIEVEMENTS
Appomattox
- Appomattox County Public Schools division and Appomattox Elementary School were recently awarded 2009 Board of Education Excellence Awards. The school division and elementary school met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by Governor Tim Kaine and the State Board of Education.
- The following Appomattox Elementary School students were recognized recently on the Reading Safari: Austin Pannell, Haley Ferguson, Jacob Poore, Kameron Coffey, Joshua Vannoy, Alexia Cooper, Haley Giles, Larnza Culpepper, Jakeem Haskins, Tia Hodge, Jazmine Walker and T'Keyah St. John.
- The following Appomattox County principals were recognized at the Jan. 22 School Board Meeting in honor of Virginia Principals Appreciation Week:
Katherine Paine of Appomattox Primary School, Tom Yarber of Appomattox Elementary School, Martha Eagle of Appomattox Middle School, and Michael Kelly, interim principal of Appomattox County High School.
Bedford
- Mariel Messier took first place in the Bedford Middle School spelling bee and will advance to the County Spelling Bee to be held Feb. 5 at Liberty High School. Anna Strom was the runner-up in the BMS bee.
- The following Moneta Elementary School students donated the most items during their annual Christmas Food Drive: Cailynn Beggs, Shayla Miller, Arlene Monsees, Austin Strader, Coy Mullins, Cole Thompson and Aaliyah English. The students and faculty donated 1,219 items. The food drive was conducted in cooperation with Lake Christian Ministries, the Agape Center and the Moneta Elementary Student Council Association.
Lynchburg
- The following William Marvin Bass Elementary School students were named ‘Terrific Kids’ by the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club: Anthony Wade, McKiyah Murray, Donyale Goode, Jordan White, Treasean Hall, Kelsey St. John, Makayla Saunders, Preshus Crouch, Mikayla Cobbs, Tatianna Shaed, Arielle Johnson, Alexis Jackson, Teyanna Scott, Bianka Coleman, Tequilla Evans and Michael Doss.
Private Schools
- The following Branches Academy students were recently named to the All-A Honor Roll: McKenna Hamilton, Lydia Linkenhoker and Bailey Reynolds, first grade; and Emily McGuirt and Jessica Murphy, third grade.
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School senior Mary King has been selected to attend Sweet Briar College’s Opera Workshop. Classes are held twice weekly until May 2. King will perform in SBC’s upcoming production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance.’
- The following New Covenant Schools students were named to the All-A Honor Roll (Summa Cum Laude) for the second quarter: Alyssa Hartman and Laura Sharrett, 11th grade; Kenzie Bryant, eighth grade; Elizabeth McDowell, Lauren Bunnell and Mattie Sullivan, seventh grade; Olivia Plant, Emily Kalafian and Lisa Pyle, sixth grade; Marni Thompson, Rebekah Borah, Michael Simmons, Jessica Bright, Ben Sullivan, Sierra Witt, Rebecca Pickard and Emily Weatherholt, fifth grade; and Meredith Buckley, Makenzie Chenault, Grayson Reynolds, Tanner Olsen, Taylor Pantana, Karlie Bryant and Mary Thompson, fourth grade.

Regional Programs
- The following local middle school students will travel to Australia this summer as People to People delegates: Morgan Rogers of Forest Middle School, Matthew Truitte of Linkhorne Middle School, and Kimberly Martin, Jaelyn Tuck, Trey Tumblin and Heath Farren, all of Staunton River Middle School. Stella Osborne, librarian and gifted coordinator at Moneta Elementary School, will serve as the delegation leader. While in Australia the delegates will participate in a significant, localized service project in cooperation with the hosting community.
