Appomattox’s first community education program sponsored by the Museum of the Confederacy will focus on traditions of love during the Civil War.
The program, called Hearts of War and scheduled for Valentine’s Day at the Appomattox Community Center, will feature valentines and letters sent between soldiers and their loves from the museum’s extensive collection, said Megan Stagg, with the museum’s media relations department.
The museum announced in September 2007 that it would create three satellite locations as a way to expand its exhibit space, including a location in Appomattox that would focus on themes surrounding the end of the Civil War. The museum will lease land recently purchased by the town of Appomattox and construction is slated to begin sometime this fall.
A talk will outline “valentine traditions that would have happened during the war and how hard it was to be away from people they loved,” Stagg said.
The talk also will detail various relationships during the war, such as the one between Jefferson Davis and his wife, Varina.
“We’re trying to start doing programs out in the Appomattox area to keep our presence and let people know we’re still coming,” Stagg said.
The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Appomattox Community Center. Pre-registration is required by visiting www.moc.org or contacting Linda Lipscomb at (804) 649-1861, ext. 32 or llipscomb@moc.org. The cost is $10 for non-members and $5 for members. Light refreshments will be served.
