- The following Big Island Elementary School students were classroom winners in the school spellng bee: Meg Tomlinson, James Wade, Scott Wood and Tyler Thompson. Meg Tomlinson was the school winner and will represent BIES at the regional bee. Tyler Thompson was the runner-up.
- Big Island Elementary School art teacher Karen Nuzzo recently received a $800 grant from Target. The grant will be used to take fifth- and sixth-graders on a field trip to the new Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke.

Garcia took first place in the Holy Cross bee, Meghann Hansen placed second and Brady Doughtery took third. Hansen will serve as the alternate.
