In Dover, N.H., Krzysztof Dzienniak, learned the hard way that riding a golf cart across state lines is illegal.
That’s where he switched the cart for a taxicab-yellow 1982 Suzuki moped and continued on a trek across the United States. He hopes to raise money for bone marrow testing for leukemia sufferers in Poland.
His trip began on Sept. 15 in Portland, Maine, and a little less than four months and 40 states later — his moped goes 20 miles per hour — Dzienniak arrived in Lynchburg. He spent Wednesday night in the R.B. Taylor & Sons Inc. parking lot on Wards Road.
Dzienniak, a Poland native, also hopes the charity project, dubbed “20,000 miles of street sailing,” will catch Oprah Winfrey's eye. His next stop is Charlottesville. If all goes as planned, he said his journey will end in Chicago around Jan. 23 after traveling through 48 states. He’s hoping to figure out a way to get on Oprah’s talk show after he arrives in Chicago.
“There are many people who have money, and I have the passion and energy to do unique things. I would like to share that energy with other people,” Dzienniak said through a translator as he prepared to make his way down Wards Road Thursday morning.
