Volunteers with the Community Dialogue on Race and Racism are organizing inauguration-watching parties at 14 different locations.
This is the first project to come out of the dialogue’s diversity events action group. All residents are encouraged to attend the free festivities.
“Hopefully, everyone can come together to see this historic event and enjoy and celebrate,” said volunteer Frank Elbertson. “This is a first (for our action group) and it’s a small step toward what we’re trying to achieve, but it’s a great beginning.”
Inauguration events will be televised from the various city venues between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Organizers are also asking residents to write down their personal reflections about the presidential ceremony. Those statements will be collected and displayed in the public library. Officials will then mail them to the White House.
Watching parties will be held at the following locations: The Depot Grille, Waterfalls Fine Dining, Starlight Café, The Daily Bread, Lynchburg Public Library, both branches of the YMCA of Central Virginia, and the recreation centers of Templeton Senior, College Hill, Daniel’s Hill, Diamond Hill, Jefferson Park, Yoder, and Miller.
Events will also be broadcast on the dialogue’s Web site, www.manyvoicesonecommunity.com. Interested residents can also download personal reflection forms from the site and submit them to the city. Submissions must be received by Jan. 26 to be included in the White House mailing.
The Community Dialogue on Race and Racism was organized by the city in 2007 to generate discussion about race and begin efforts to improve conditions locally.
The diversity events action group is charged with creating opportunities for residents to “engage in experiences which explore and celebrate our cultural diversities.”
