High school juniors and seniors and their families are invited to any one of four private colleges in the area this Saturday to learn about the cost and value of attending a private college.
Liberty University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College and Sweet Briar College are among 25 private colleges in the state that will offer a session at 10 a.m. in association with the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia.
LC President Kenneth Garren, who serves on the CICV’s executive committee, said that the participating colleges plan to explain what makes private colleges affordable even during an economic recession.
“This is the time in the year when a lot of high school seniors are applying to colleges and scheduling visits and looking into financial aid,” he said in a recent interview. “It’s important for colleges and for all organizations, that we don’t just hunker down and not do things (during the recession) but that we really operate very strategically.”
Although the sticker price of attending private college may seem high, he stressed, 98 percent of undergraduate students at LC receive some form of financial assistance. And the numbers are similar at other private colleges, he said.
“With so much federal aid and college aid, it really reduces the price that it takes to come to a college,” he said.
