After receiving budget-related survey results from more than 900 employees, members of the Bedford County School Board on Thursday discussed a few minor changes to a draft budget for the 2009-10 school year.
The new draft proposes cuts to 77 job positions, a few less than the 80 positions previously up for elimination.
Those cuts would make up for $3 million of the $4.8 million in funding the board is expected to lose in the coming year.
Superintendent James Blevins said that some of those cut positions may be reinstated if the economic stimulus package under consideration by the Senate is approved.
Surveys the board received from employees this week indicate that some would be willing to take minor salary cuts if that would save jobs. But instead, the board decided to freeze salaries.
“We’re already at the bottom of the (local salary) scale,” said board member David Black.
Also new to the draft budget, the board projects it will receive $164,000 by asking students’ families to pay half the cost of dual enrollment courses.
Last week, the board considered also charging for half the cost to attend Governor’s School, but Superintendent James Blevins said Thursday that would go against the appropriation act for Governor’s Schools.
