Amherst County will receive $1.1 million in federal money to improve homes in the Old Madison Heights neighborhood, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced Tuesday.
“We were pleased to hear of the announcement, because the revitalization of Old Madison Heights is a priority for the county and its future planning,” said David Proffitt, the acting county administrator.
The next step in the process probably will involve meetings with residents this fall to plan how the work will be carried out, Proffitt said.
The project could help 42 people, and 34 of those have low to moderate incomes, according to Kaine’s announcement.
The federal money flows to Amherst County through the Virginia Community Development Block Grant program, which assists small cities with upgrades. Amherst will provide $40,175 in matching funds, Proffitt said.
The Amherst project is listed as a multi-year program, which means more federal or state funds could become available in future years.
The county will address substandard housing in the Stump Hill community as the first step in the larger Old Madison Heights revitalization, Kaine’s announcement said.
The project will rehabilitate eight owner-occupied homes and substantially reconstruct one of them. A rental home also will be upgraded, and three vacant structures will be demolished.
New water lines will be brought into the neighborhood, and five homes will be connected to a sewer line.
