Amherst treasurer plans to retire at end of year

Amherst Treasurer Donald Wood plans to retire at the end of the year after nearly four decades as the county’s chief financial officer.

Wood, 66, was first elected in 1971 and succeeded Dorothy Kent Harvey. He is retiring to spend more time on his hobbies and with his family, he said.

“It’s been a real great ride for me,” said Wood. “I’ve enjoyed working for the county and I appreciate the people letting me serve this long. I’ve been very fortunate.”

Wood, a county native, has worked in the Amherst treasurer’s office for 47 years. He graduated from Amherst County High School in 1962 and was appointed deputy treasurer by Harvey later that year.

The biggest change in all his years with the county is of course the technology, Wood said. When he first started, he recalled using a single adding machine.

“We typed all the tax tickets by hand,” said Wood, describing it a time-consuming process.

The treasurer, one of five elected constitutional officers, serves in four-year terms and oversees collection and receipt of county revenue as well as the accounting of its disbursement.

Wood’s planned retirement date is Dec. 31, 2009, two years before his current term expires. The county’s central accounting director has started to research procedures for closing out his term, according to a report Acting County Administrator David Proffitt was set to present to the Board of Supervisors.

The deputy treasurer may serve in an interim capacity until the following election, according to a state code section regarding vacancies in constitutional offices. If that person does not want to serve, the circuit court shall make an interim appointment to fill the vacancy.
