Appomattox County supervisors changed their minds this week on whether to allocate money in the fiscal year 2010 budget for an economic development director.
Reversing an earlier decision, the board voted 4-1 Monday to reallocate $84,000 for salary and benefits for the economic development director position, county administrator Aileen Ferguson said. Supervisor Willie Craft was the only dissenting vote.
“The understanding is they would hire an economic development director. That’s why they would put the money back,” Ferguson said.
The move came, Ferguson said, after several citizens spoke before the board, requesting supervisors reconsider a decision made last month when they approved the FY2010 budget and set the tax rate.
At that meeting, three supervisors voted against including money in the budget for the position because they felt the local economy needed to be in better shape before such a job would be effective.
“Every one of them just expressed their desire that the board hire an economic development director,” Ferguson said, of the citizens who spoke at Monday’s meeting. “They felt there was a definite need and they felt it would have a positive impact.”
The next step will be for supervisors to approve a job description and advertise the opening, Ferguson said.
