The city has accepted a $350,000 state grant for a 29-acre park planned for inside the Lynchpin Industrial Park on Lakeside Drive.
The grant brings the funding for Ivy Creek Park’s first phase to about $1.1 million.
The first phase includes construction of an entrance road and parking lot, trails leading to and around a stream-fed lake on site, stabilization of an old cabin and repair work on an earthen dam.
Future plans also call for the development of a new and improved home for the Nature Zone, a children’s education center. That aspect of the project has been pushed back due to budget constraints.
On Tuesday, Lynchburg City Council accepted a grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation that will fund a majority of the expected road construction costs.
Andy Reeder, the city’s parks manager, said his department plans to pursue additional grants and donations, as well as volunteer labor when possible, in its efforts to see the full park plan executed one day.
“The park will get built,” he said. “It just may take a little longer.”
Work on phase one is scheduled to begin this fall. When finished, Reeder said it will provide the basic infrastructure needed to allow people to begin using the site.
“At a minimum, there will be a park that people can access and go fishing and have picnics at,” he said. “That’s still pretty exciting.”
