Appomattox

Bedford
- The following Bedford Middle School students were named school winners in the Young Authors contest: Michelle Cox, first place, Mariel Messier, second, and Stephanie Craig, third, seventh grade, Short Story; Mitchell Abell, first place, Ashlie Snead, second, and Deyonna Williams, third, seventh grade, Poetry; Audra VanDerwerker, first place, Taylor Myers, second, and Jacob Beisser, third, eighth grade, Short Story; and Cody Williams, first place, Madison Karnes, second, and Amanda Pace, third, eighth grade, Poetry.
- The following Jefferson Forest High School students were winners in the first round of the Forest Lions Club’s Bland Music Scholarship competition: Brian Farrell (bagpipes), first place, Dylan Barber (marimba), second, and Sarah Wood (piano), third, Instrumental Division; Caroline Ballard, first place, and Caitlin Stitt, second, Vocal Division.
- The Jefferson Forest High School Forensics Team was named the runner-up for the 2009 Seminole District Title. Eight members of the nine-member team will advance to the Region III Forensics Tournament. The following JFHS students placed in the event: Graydon Uyeda, first, and Paul Zivick, second, Foreign Extemporaneous; Robert Grier, first, Domestic Extemporaneous; Eric Fesmire, second, Original Oratory; Stephanie DeRonde, fourth, Storytelling; Catherine Mohr, third, Poetry; Greg Thompson, second, Prose Interpretation; and Alex Gilley, second, Serious Drama Interpretation.
Lynchburg
- The following Heritage High School students in the career-technical program were named Optimist Club winners and were recognized at a luncheon held Feb. 19: Jessica Ogden-Lewis, Brice Bhalla, Antonio Davis, Monica Li and Jon Rambo.
- Heritage High School senior Kyle Tenny was recently named a United States Presidential Scholars Program candidate. This program honors some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. Semifinalists will be selected in April.
- Heritage High School student Ben Karaus was recently named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.
- The following William M.
