Service reductions and organizational changes are a major component of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s plan to cut $2 billion from its budget over the next six years.
Details of those changes will be discussed at a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Central Virginia Community College.
Around here, those changes could be felt on the majority of roads in Campbell and Appomattox counties, said Appomattox district administrator Don Austin.
Between 85 to 90 percent of roads in those counties have less than 2,500 cars per day and services such as snow removal, pothole repair and mowing could be drastically reduced, Austin said.
Additionally, there are plans to close the Amherst County residency office. Austin said the Appomattox residency office would cover Amherst, Campbell and Appomattox counties, but the office would function differently by focusing “mostly on maintenance and emergency response.”
Campbell County Administrator David Laurrell said the changes could bring a significant shift in road maintenance and construction over the next 10 years, “with the secondary and urban system coming back over to the localities.”
