CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The University of Virginia has received a $10.7 million pledge from a longtime patron for the construction of a rehearsal hall for band and music programs.
The university says the pledge by Hunter J. Smith was made through the Hunter Smith Family Foundation. The 12,900-square-foot hall will include a 4,000-square-foot rehearsal room, a library and offices. Construction is scheduled to start in January.
Smith and her late husband, Carl W. Smith, gave $1.5 million for the Cavalier Marching Band in 2003. They also donated $23 million to expand the school's football stadium and $2 million for a new football stadium at U.Va.'s College at Wise.
