The city will hold a “Budget Open House” next week, offering residents a chance to air concerns and ask city staff questions.
The open house — a first for Lynchburg — will take place immediately before the annual public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The event is designed to be less formal than the hearing itself, which will take place before City Council. It will also allow residents an opportunity for direct dialogue with city representatives.
“We wanted to have that opportunity for engagement,” said City Manager Kimball Payne. “We wanted to give the public a chance to interact with city staff one-on-one.”
Comments made during public hearings typically draw no immediate response from city officials. By contrast, the open house is designed to allow residents to ask questions and get answers.
The open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the lobby of City Hall at 900 Church St.
At 7:10 p.m., City Council will meet to convene public hearings on the proposed budget and tax rate for the new fiscal year.
Council is not scheduled to hold any budget talks of its own that night. The next budget debate is set for April 7.
