Campbell County comes alive with summer events

A new flea market, a large book sale and a community art show will make Rustburg a busy place on Saturday.

- Groups and individuals can sell their wares or extra stuff at a new Rustburg flea market, held at what used to be a corn maze.

Monnie Steele, co-owner of The Market at Trestle Park, said while the corn maze was a lot of fun, logistics made continuing the business difficult. “We don’t live on the property and vandalism and logistical problems, it just wasn’t feasible to continue,” she said.

The family will now hold a flea market on the slice of land at the corner of Trestle Road and U.S. 501 every Saturday into the fall.

“I think this will be a lot of fun, too, and this is a time, with the economy, I think people are really anxious to barter or find deals,” Steele said. “I think it’s going to be a good community builder, which is what I enjoy doing.”

The cost to sell is $8 (or $7 with reservations) with table rentals costing $2. Admission to the market is 50 cents, with those 10 and under free. The market opens for sellers at 7 a.m. and to the public at 8 a.m. For more information, call (434) 821-4780.

- The Campbell County Friends of the Library will host its annual book sale fundraiser at the Rustburg Library from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. While some of the books are donations, many are culled from the library collection because they haven’t been checked out in several years, said director Nan Carmack.

Titles are mostly adult fiction with some books from most other genres. All hardcover books are $1 and paperbacks are 10 for $1. Additionally, bundles of 10 magazines are $1. “You can get lots of stuff for a buck,” Carmack said.

Money raised will go to the Friends of the Library, which in turn donates to the county’s collection and pays for additional programming, Carmack said. “It’s so important this year because of budget cuts.”

- Artwork of all types will be on display at the annual Campbell County art show and sale. Artists can enter their creations for judging in four categories as well as sell their work, said Campbell County recreation co-chair Sherry Harding. “It’s an opportunity for local artists to show their work and network together and show the public what they can do and gives them an opportunity to sell their work.”

In addition to art, Harding said, there will be several crafters selling their wares.

Artists from throughout the region can enter the show, which has been an annual event for more than 15 years, Harding said. Entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. today. To enter, contact Beth Worth at (434) 332-9570.

The show will be in Court House Square from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free to the public and artists set their own prices.
