Bedford County officials could vote tonight to set up a procedure that would require audits from more than 20 volunteer fire and rescue agencies throughout the area.
The Board of Supervisors last month agreed to explore a mandate for audits on all outside agencies that obtain county contributions, although a few members expressed concern over how it could affect the relationship with local emergency volunteers. The county annually contributes to more than 20 fire departments and rescue squads.
Several board members in favor of the move said it is a good practice that ensures the county is a good steward of taxpayer dollars. Supervisor Steve Arrington, who serves the Big Island district, said the move is a practical way of doing business.
The board is scheduled to discuss a proposal for an Agreed Upon Procedures (AUP) engagement to be performed for volunteer agencies.
Conducting a yearly review of the AUP ensures adequate financial controls are in place, according to a resolution set to go before the board.
Other outside agencies seeking public funds would also be required to submit financial reports to the county during the board’s yearly budget process.
Also tonight, supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposed conservation easement at Montvale Park just off U.S. 460 about 10 miles west of the city of Bedford.
