As part of the process of updating its comprehensive plan, Campbell County is asking its citizens to comment on the new draft of proposed changes.
The county will hold a public meeting Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. in Rustburg’s Haberer Building for residents to review the plan and proposed changes, as well as provide comment in person or in writing.
“All of the updates are relatively minor,” community development director Paul Harvey said. The most significant change, he added, was incorporating an urban development area in the land-use planning map, a move that the state mandated.
An urban development area has much higher population density than anything on the county’s comprehensive plan prior to this update.
“The idea is to encourage development in certain places that are more suited for it,” Harvey said. “(The state) wants to discourage continuous sprawl-type development that just adds to infrastructure like roads that are expensive for VDOT to maintain.”
Other changes include minor revisions to the county land use map that are the result of a more sophisticated mapping system, Harvey said.
“But the ideas behind the map and policies remain the same,” he said.
Supervisors and planners will use feedback received in person during Monday’s meeting and written comments received by June 1 as they review the draft during a joint meeting June 18. Following that meeting, the county will hold a formal public hearing to adopt the plan.
Also Monday, the Board of Supervisors will hold a regular meeting at 1 p.m. in the Rustburg Haberer Building. On the agenda is adoption of the Fiscal Year 2010 budget, which includes no tax increases and is 1 percent less than the current fiscal year.
