Appomattox
-The following Appomattox County High School Future Farmers of America members placed recently in competitions: William Lewis, first place, HUB Federation Small Engines Troubleshooting contest, and second, Southside Area Small Engines Troubleshooting contest; Michael Williamson and Marcus Driggers, first, Southside Area Tractor Troubleshooting contest.
- Appomattox Elementary School student Steven Tappen took first place among all fourth-grade participants in the written component of the MastiSpell 2009 Jr. Spelling Bee Competition held April 18 at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn. He placed fifth out of 372 participants in the oral component. He is the son of Samuel and Teresa Tappen of Appomattox.
Bedford
- The Lynchburg Junior Woman’s Club donated $100 for the purchase of library books at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
- The following Thomas Jefferson Elementary School students and members of Brownie Troop 2265 participated in a yard sale which raised $300 for TJES: Madison and Gabrielle Nazigian, Natalia Griffis and Taylor Cheatwood.
- The following Thomas Jefferson Elementary School students were winners of the 2009 Science Fair: Robert Bartnett, Jason Brown and Tate Dorman, Camryn Casey, Shelvia Forrest, Lexi Gossum, Sam Hunter and Cole Scott, Matt Owen, Luke Rogers, Kyle Walkup and Jarod Watson. Brown, Dorman, Forrest, Hunter, Scott and Walkup represented TJES in the regional contest held May 12 at Central Virginia Governor’s School.
- Liberty High School student Joshua Booth was named the high school-level winner of the Virgnia School Boards Association Regional Art Contest held April 22.

- Haley Lane of Linkhorne Elementary School and Chris Tugman of Linkhorne Middle School were named winners of the Americanism Essay Contest, sponsored annually by the American Legion Auxiliary.
- E.C. Glass High School/Central Virginia Governor’s School student Jordan Minot competed in the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held May 10-16 in Reno, Nev. Minot, a junior, was chosen for the trip after becoming the Grand Award Winner in Physical Sciences at the Regional Science Fair held in March.

- Virginia Episcopal School raised $2,500 for Stop Hunger Now through its third annual Community Service Day. Projects included several on-campus clean-ups and trips to Lynchburg Grows and Westminster-Canterbury. The student body also held a free dog wash on campus with donations benefiting Operation Smile.

- Professional photographs from Africa will be on sale during all Mercy Care Centre fundraisers. The Council is also collecting cotton underwear in all sizes to send to students in Kenya. Donations accepted until June 1.
Heritage High School

- Raffle tickets are currently on sale for two picnic tables and a children’s playhouse constructed by the Building Trades class. Tickets are $4 each or $10 for three. The raffle will be held in December following the Lynchburg Christmas Parade. Proceeds benefit CASA of Central Virginia.
