Amherst supervisors will hold a public hearing tonight on a proposal from the county’s public safety department to place a wireless communications tower on U.S. 60 near Lowesville Road.
The proposed 80-foot tower on land owned by the Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad is for the purpose of receiving and transmitting electronic data for emergency calls. The county’s code places a 50-foot height limit on cell towers, which would warrant an exemption from officials.
Also tonight, supervisors will hold six other public hearings on zoning matters and an appointment to the Amherst County School Board — supervisors are seeking input on the District 5 seat that has a term expiring in June.
Susan Cunningham, the current representative, has served on the school board for the past eight years and wishes to be reappointed.
Other subjects to be covered in the hearings include giving citizens more time to secure subdivision plat approvals, special exceptions and amendments to the county’s zoning ordinance and several requests for businesses.
Supervisors are also scheduled to talk more today about ongoing efforts regarding a newly established broadband authority. The board approved a resolution in April to create such an authority to partner with private Internet providers with a goal of countywide service.
The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at 153 Washington St. in Amherst.
Supervisors are also scheduled to meet with the county’s planning commission at 4 p.m.
