Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today expressed support and confidence that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's nominee to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court, will be confirmed and serve the nation's highest court well.
"I'm very happy about it," said Kaine, speaking on his monthly call-in radio show on WTOP in Washington.
"He had a number of great candidates whose names were mentioned who I assume were under consideration but I think he has made the right pick.
"America is still the land of unlikely stories -- thank goodness," added Kaine, who also serves as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Kaine said Sotomayor's judicial track record and long service on the federal bench, combined with a "powerful" life story of rising to success from a humble upbringing in a South Bronx public housing project, will "bode well for the court."
The governor also noted that Sotomayor had first been nominated to the federal district court bench by President George H.W. Bush, and later promoted to the federal appeals circuit by President Bill Clinton, and received Republican support during both her confirmation hearings in the Senate.
"They know this person," Kaine said. "It's not as if she's an unknown quantity. . . . But I think her background is going to serve her well and she's going to be confirmed.
