Appomattox County schools chief to step down

Appomattox County Schools Superintendent Aldridge Boone, who has only been at the helm of the division for about two years, announced Thursday he will resign, although not immediately.

During a closed session meeting Thursday, Boone gave school board members his letter of resignation. It stated he will not seek or accept renewal of his contract that expires in June 2010.

Wesley Williams, board chairman, said officials were surprised by Boone’s decision. When asked if Boone told the board why he was resigning, Williams could not identify what led to the decision.

“There was a discussion, and it was long and varied and I’m not sure I could pick out a specific reason,” Williams said.

He also noted the board is in the beginning of Boone’s annual evaluation, which has been changed somewhat this year to include private interviews with community members and division personnel.

Boone, who did not return calls for comment Friday, came to the division in 2007 after previously serving as the assistant superintendent for instruction in Dinwiddie County. He is a graduate of Saint Leo University, George Washington University and Harvard University where he earned his master’s degree in teaching and curriculum.

When Williams was asked if he was satisfied with Boone’s performance, he skirted the issue.

“He will certainly be remembered for implementing some noteworthy remediation programs at the middle school and high school,” he said.

Bobby Mitchell, board vice chairman, said he has been supportive of the superintendent, but noted there are always areas of disagreement. Mitchell declined to cite any specific disagreements.

Boone’s short tenure has not been without controversy. In October 2008, he suddenly reassigned Appomattox County High School Principal Greg Wheeler. After being removed from his post, Wheeler was later reassigned to a teaching position at Appomattox Middle School.

Boone has declined to release details on the matter, citing its confidentiality as a personnel issue.

Both Mitchell and Williams said they anticipate the board beginning work on filling the superintendent position soon.

It is unknown when Boone will depart. His two-sentence resignation letter stated he would keep the board informed as he contemplates his future with the school system.

“I will keep you informed as I explore other career options in the event that acceptance of such an offer may result in an earlier departure date,” the letter states.

Mitchell said Boone’s resignation letter could allude to a departure earlier than June 2010.

“There’s a possibility in that paragraph, in that part, if he finds something, he’ll leave us,” Mitchell said.

The Appomattox School Board is scheduled to meet June 15 for the closed session interviews with various community members.
