Liberty Christian Academy is on the way to a new $350,000 playground.
Already, the school has laid down synthetic grass and paved a new basketball court in an area that used to be a maintenance parking lot. Now, the school is working to raise funds for playground equipment. About $45,000 more is needed.
School spokesman John Patterson said that students enjoy running and playing in an area that is less cramped than the previous playground. LCA had been limiting students’ playground time to a few days a week, because there was not enough space on the old playground to accommodate all the students every day.
Patterson said daily outdoor playtime is a priority for the school and for young prospective students.
“The one thing they really want to see is: ‘What is the playground like?’” Patterson said.
Plans for the new playground equipment include swings, slides, tetherball, crawl spaces, climbing features and a sandbox with faux palm trees. The synthetic grass was chosen because it does not require extensive maintenance.
Patterson said that the money for the project thus far has come from donations and school fundraisers, like the “Night of Tropical Paradise” auction held Oct 24. Other fundraisers have included peanut and coupon-book sales. He expects that the new playground equipment will be put in place as soon as the last of the money is raised. He predicts that will happen well before the beginning of the next school year.
