The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company is being applauded by state transportation officials after winning a national award for excellence earlier this year.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board, which sets administrative policy for Virginia transportation, passed a resolution commending and congratulating GLTC on being one of only four transit systems in the nation to be recognized with a 2009 award from the American Public Transportation Association.
The association, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that claims nearly 1,500 member organizations, named GLTC the outstanding transit system of the year among other organizations of its size.
The award, which comes during GLTC’s 35th anniversary, is particularly meaningful for local officials because GLTC has been making a concerted effort in recent years to improve its performance record.
GLTC has mounted a long-term campaign to improve service, including adopting a more aggressive maintenance schedule and working to replace old buses. At the same time, it has also seen an explosion in ridership fueled primarily by a partnership with Liberty University.
GLTC ridership has doubled over the past three years, with around 3 million boardings recorded during the last fiscal year.
The award from the American Public Transportation Association was announced over the summer and formally presented during an association conference last month.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board passed a resolution commending GLTC on its achievement Oct. 15. Board member and Lynchburg representative Ken White then presented a copy to local officials during GLTC’s annual meeting Oct. 28.
White said he was proud of how GLTC has met the challenges it faces. “I think it really shows what a great system GLTC has become and what a real asset it is to the City of Lynchburg,” he said.
GLTC officials say they were surprised and pleased with the award. They plan to continue working to improve their service.
