An early morning crash on the Lynchburg Expressway has left a Rustburg man with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Paul Richards Matthews, 33, was driving north on the expressway around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. He lost control of his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu near the U.S. 29 exit and crashed into several guardrails before he was thrown from the car.

Matthews was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital and then airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was in intensive care Sunday night.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. They still are investigating and ask that anyone with additional information about the crash call the Lynchburg Police Dept. at (434) 455-6047 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
