A former Hardy Volunteer Fire Department firefighter pleaded guilty this morning to embezzling thousands of dollars from the department.
Cory Shifflett, 23, pleaded guilty to seven counts of embezzlement in Bedford County Circuit Court Tuesday morning. He admitted to Virginia State Police agents that he used a Hardy Volunteer Fire Department gas card to fuel his personal car, according to testimony.
Bedford Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Krantz said Cory Shifflett stole $5,000 to $10,000 but was the least involved in an embezzlement scheme that Krantz said also involved Shifflett’s father, Jeffrey, and stepmother, Deborah.
The couple was accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars since at least 2007. Jeffrey Shifflett committed suicide a day after the trio was indicted in July.
Deborah Shifflett’s trial is set for January. Cory Shifflett will remain out of jail on bond until his sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
