FERRUM — A deer hunter faces manslaughter and other charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a Ferrum College student and the wounding of another.

A college spokeswoman says three students were collecting frogs for a biology class at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when two were shot along a trail about a mile west of campus. A female student died after being shot in the chest. A male student was shot in the hand. The other student wasn’t injured.

The victims haven’t been identified.

Sgt. Karl Martin the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says 31-year-old Jason David Cloutier of Ferrum was charged with manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing.

The college scheduled a prayer service for 10 a.m. Wednesday.
