Writer: Palin epitomizes worst of GOP
The Nov. 9 issue of Newsweek has several articles on Sarah Palin that those concerned about the next presidential election should read. She seems to vacillate between a sexual bimbo to an intellectually challenged “foreign policy expert.” She clearly expresses the far right conservative view that it’s all about “me and my ideology.” Forget about the needs of this country and its people. The only thing that matters politically is that “we” win. She can’t even finish her term as Alaska governor, because the country so needs her to lead us to her views of utopia.
She epitomizes what is happening to the Republican Party. If you aren’t ideologically pure, you are out. Look at what just happened in the New York congressional race in the last election. The party would rather lose the election than allow an incumbent moderate to win.
Think also of how the party of “No” is responding to the overhaul of our dysfunctional health care system. They put up a farcical “plan” just to offer something even though it wouldn’t address any of the looming problems.
They just want to “beat” the president. Thankfully, the Democrats are still at it. For them, it’s about the country — not just me.
Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell also demonstrates the Palin flavor. He wants to privatize Virginia liquor stores for a one-time $500 million to satisfy his ideology. That’s like eating our seed corn. He wants to trade a continuing source of revenue for a one-time return during “my” term of office.
Space doesn’t permit addressing all the Newsweek Palin issues, but consider one that relates directly to us in Lynchburg. She wants to teach “creationism” in the public schools as an alternative to evolution, despite the overwhelming evidence that evolution is the clear process by which all living things developed on Earth, including humans. There is no debate on this issue in the scientific community. If you want to teach creationism, do so where it belongs — in church. If Liberty University takes over the City Council next May, Sarah Palin’s viewpoint could prevail.
If the Republican Party wants to remain in the wilderness for decades, they should nominate her in 2012.
It would ensure President Barack Obama’s re-election. For those in the party who care about their nation and its people, I am truly sorry your party is leaving you. But you do have an option.
