A city sheriff’s deputy has been charged with felony hit and run after his car collided with a Lynchburg College student Saturday evening, said Capt. Brandon Zuidema of the Lynchburg Police Department.

The student received minor injuries, Zuidema said. The deputy, Sgt. Christian Meacham, stopped and spoke with the student, then left his car and walked away from the scene on College Street without identifying himself, Zuidema said.

“He was subsequently identified and arrested for felony hit and run,” Zuidema said.

Meacham has since been released from the city jail, Zuidema said.

No other charges are pending. Zuidema could not provide additional information on Tuesday, including why Meacham may have left the scene or how the accident happened.

Lynchburg Sheriff Ron Gillispie could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office Web site, Meacham was promoted to sergeant in February after six years with the sheriffs’ office. He previously worked for the Blue Ridge Regional Jail for four years.
