ACHIEVEMENTS

Appomattox

Appomattox County High School FFA Chapter members Michael Williamson and Marcus Driggers took second place in the State Tractor Troubleshooting Contest held recently at the State Fair of Virginia. These students will each receive a scholarship from the State Fair of Virginia.

Bedford

• The following schools placed n the Bedford County Invitational Marching Band Competition held Oct. 3 at Jefferson Forest High School: William Campbell High School, first, Westover Christian Academy, second, and Rustburg High School, third, Class A; Bluestone High School, first, Cave Spring High School, second, and Brookville High School, third, Class AA; and George Washington High School, first, and Blacksburg High School, second, Class AAA.

• The following Thaxton Elementary School students were elected Student Council Association officers for the 2009-2010 school year: Aaron Plattus, president, Hunter Alto, vice president, Mikaela Elkins, secretary, Autumn Litchford, treasurer, and Haley Maxfield, reporter.

• Big Island Elementary School principal Deborah Shelton raised $385 during the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s ‘Lock Up for MDA’ fundraiser.

Lynchburg

• The following William M. Bass Elementary School students were named ‘Terrific Kids’ by the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club: Diallo Graves, Ania Mosby, Kabria Jackson, Michelah Scott, Kelly Brown, Demonja Davis, Shakyla Williams, Jalin Perkins, Autumn Banks, Montrez Jones, Chris Megginson, Keante Swain, Destini Robertson, Myleahia Vaughter, Brandon Staley, Kevin Scott, Tenaeja Garland, Raiah Taylor, Camarria Hall, Tyana Snead, Dignacio Hubbard, Desharee Hubbard, Zaquon Lee, Taylor Morgan, Brian Hunt, Samira Saunders, Jaquann Pinn, Dashawn Green, Armonie Walker, Arionn Kiser, Jalen Coleman, Janalyn Blankenship, Isiah Douglas and Makayla Saunders.

• The E.C. Glass Band was named ‘Grand Champion’ and took first place in the categories of music, color guard and visual effects at the USSBA Virginia Beach Music Games held at Kempsville High School.

E.C. Glass High School student James Rapiejko was selected as the Tenor I Alternate No. 3 at Virginia Honors Choir auditions held recently at Longwood University.

Private Schools

Liberty Christian Academy student Jessica Velastegui took first runner-up honors and won a $900 scholarship in the Greater Lynchburg Junior Miss Pageant.

Fray Educational Center

•The Fray Educational Center, located next to Rustburg High School, is holding its eighth annual Craft Festival from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. The event features craft vendors, food, games for children, music and a silent auction. For more information or to sign up as a vendor, call F.E.C. at (434) 332-1180. Proceeds benefit F.E.C.

Lynchburg
